Today's American Catholic was established in June 1993 as an open forum for all believers, and even non-believers, but especially lay people. At the time, the church was closing ranks by cutting down on discourse by limiting it to official voices, or those sanctioned by current church leaders. We operate under Vatican II's premise of opening the windows of the church. Our hope is to help breathe some fresh aid into its closed quarters. We believe the church is a wonder, and the variety of voices adds to its splendor -- and helps each of us to learn to attest to Christ's creation -- by respectfully and lovingly expressing ourselves.
